Electrical panel replacement is a very common repair. Often times older homes are built with electrical panels that do not meet today's electrical standards. This comes from many upgrades the home may have had since the electric service was first installed. Some people refer to an electrical panel as a "breaker box", "fuse box" or "switch box" it can often be found in a person's garage basement or utility room on the wall. If you see burnt marks or burnt bus bars inside your panel or if it looks like corrosion this is a sign you may need a new panel. If your main breaker has ever tripped it should be checked out. Take a look at what kind of panel you have. Is it a Federal Pacific or a Zinsco Panel? If you have either of these you should have them evaluated by an electrician. These both can pose risks between design flaws and safety codes. How large is your home? The panel you have may not be the right size for the amount of power you/your family is drawing. Below is a picture of an electric service replacement we did in the end of december and the customer had power back on before their house got cold and the pipes did not freeze.

Many times the whole electric service is upgraded since the meter socket and service wire may not be able to handle the upgrade. Also it's a good time to replace all the aging components of the electrical service so you will have a safe home and prevent the need to repair it at a later time. Since the power has to be disconnected it's best to do this all at one time. A qualified electrician will be able to determine the best most cost effective upgrade that will meet code and provide you with many years of trouble free service.

Sometimes it's only required that you replace the outside part of the service this may be because the service wire is damaged from getting hit or worn out due to weather see the picture on the bottom. This can be extremely dangerous and should be replaced because water can get inside the meter socket. We install all of our services with heavy gauge wire in conduit. On the left is a picture of a damaged service cable this often causes a bad neutral connection because water gets inside and corrodes the wire. Bad neutral connections can cause power surges damaging appliances. On the right is a picture of a main breaker that had tripped and we were called out to check it out. If left alone it could have caused a fire.
